career highlights: I was in a surf punk band, and John Peel came up to our attic room by the seaside to hear us play. Sometimes I think I must have dreamed it, but it happened. His toe tapped, it did, I saw it.

which creative people, places and things on your radar right now?

people: Grant Morrison, messing with minds on a monthly basis; Jackson Publick is doing great things with the Venture Bros.; Tim and Eric’s comedy is lol funny and weirdly disconcerting; and Michael Kupperman’s Tales Designed To Thrizzle from Fantagraphics is an offbeat comic treat.

places: The Baltic in Gateshead is always worth a visit, as is the Tyneside Cinema.

things: My phone gets the internet. I feel like Buck Rogers.

what’s your favourite daydream? I still have pop star fantasies, which is quite sad as I am way too old, and some would say too beautiful.

what was the last rule you broke? Grammar rules and syntax for pussies is. Also, I killed someone.

if you could ask a question of someone you respect, who and what would you ask?

Batman: "Do you think that your one-man vigilante war on crime in Gotham City will ever end, and if so, would you be happy?"
